One Day on the Trishuli River: Nepal’s Perfect Whitewater Starter
Why Trishuli?
Nepal has wilder rivers. The Karnali is bigger, the Sun Koshi is longer, and the Bhote Koshi is steeper and scarier. So why does the Trishuli draw more rafters than all of them combined?
Convenience
This river hugs the main Kathmandu–Pokhara–Chitwan highway. The put‑in point at Charaudi is just 85 km from Kathmandu – about 3–4 hours by road. You don’t detour for this river; it’s literally on your way.
Better yet, it’s beginner‑friendly. The classic stretch runs Class II–III – real splashes and waves, moments where the whole crew digs deep, but plenty of room for mistakes. It’s the best introduction to whitewater in the country.
The Full Day Itinerary
Early Morning (≈7:30 AM) – Depart Kathmandu
Your driver picks you up from your hotel. As you leave the Kathmandu chaos behind, the road winds through green hills, terraced rice fields, and traditional villages. Suspension bridges dangle high above the river – a scenic prelude to the day.
Mid‑Morning (≈10:00–11:00 AM) – Arrival & Safety Briefing
At Charaudi, your guide hands out helmets, life jackets, and paddles. Then comes the full safety run‑down: paddle commands, rescue drills, and what to do if you go for a swim. Everyone listens – it’s serious, but the excitement is building.
🌊 Late Morning to Early Afternoon (≈11:00 AM – 2:00 PM) – Paddle! The Rapids Begin
Your raft hits the current, and the adventure kicks off.
You’ll tackle a series of Class II‑III rapids with memorable names:
-Ladies Delight – sounds gentle, but that first wave hits you square in the face
-Upset and Surprise – the names say it all
Between the splash‑fest, calm stretches let you float, relax, and soak in the scenery – green hills, rocky gorges, and wide valleys opening up. Keep your eyes peeled for kingfishers, herons, and monkeys swinging in the trees along the banks.
🍽️ Lunchtime (≈2:00 PM) – Riverside Feast
After about two hours on the water, you beach the rafts on a scenic sandbank dotted with giant boulders. Your crew fires up the portable stove and serves a steaming plate of Dal Bhat – Nepal’s classic lentil‑soup‑and‑rice meal. Eating it with your toes in the sand, river murmuring beside you… that’s worth the trip alone.
⛰️ Afternoon (≈3:00 – 5:00 PM) – Through the Trishuli Gorge
After lunch, you push downstream into the Trishuli Gorge – narrower channels, steeper cliffs, and a few punchier rapids that demand sharp teamwork. Look up and you’ll spot the cable cars gliding toward the Manakamana Temple – a surreal overhead view.
🌇 Late Afternoon to Evening (≈5:00 – 7:00 PM) – Take‑out & Return
The rafting finishes at Kurintar or Mugling. Change into dry clothes, sip a hot tea or coffee, and snack on biscuits while the guides pack up. Then it’s back in the van for the drive to Kathmandu, arriving around early evening.
Total time: about 10–11 hours, with 3–4 hours actually on the water.
